Beyond the capital and the famous Silk Road towns lies a side of Azerbaijan that very few international travelers encounter. In the mountain communities of the Greater Caucasus, villages perched at extraordinary altitudes preserve languages, crafts and ways of life that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. This program combines Baku's cultural landmarks with a journey deep into that mountain world, visiting the coppersmith village of Lahij, the UNESCO-listed cultural landscape of Khinalig and the multi-ethnic villages of the Gakh region in one immersive and genuinely off the beaten path journey.
Day 1 — Arrival in Baku Arrival and private transfer to the hotel. Welcome dinner at a traditional Azerbaijani restaurant with live folk music.
Day 2 — Baku City Tour The UNESCO-listed Old City with the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah's Palace. After lunch, the Heydar Aliyev Center and the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, whose collection of handwoven masterpieces from across the country's regions traces the full history of one of Azerbaijan's most important craft traditions.
Day 3 — Shamakhi and Lahij West into the Caucasus foothills to the ancient Juma Mosque in Shamakhi, one of the oldest in the region, built on the site of a former Zoroastrian temple. From there the route descends to the valley of Lahij, a coppersmith village at 1,500 meters above sea level with its own distinct language and a single cobbled street lined with artisan workshops. Skilled craftsmen have been producing intricate copper and brassware here for centuries and the village feels entirely removed from the modern world. Overnight in the Gabala area.
Day 4 — Khinalig: The Village at the Top of the World A full day devoted to Khinalig, one of the most remarkable inhabited places in the Caucasus. Set at 2,200 meters above sea level, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. Its people speak a language found nowhere else on earth and maintain a way of life directly connected to the landscape around them. The village's UNESCO-listed cultural landscape, its ancient stone houses and its extraordinary mountain setting make this one of the most memorable days of any journey in Azerbaijan. Overnight in the Gabala area.
Day 5 — Gakh and the Albanian Church West to the Gakh region, home to 20 distinct ethnic communities. Ilisu Village, founded in the 13th century, reveals houses of red brick and pebble stone surrounded by ancient stone fences. The Albanian basilica in Gum village and a cooking demonstration of Surhulu, the traditional pasta dish of the Gakh region, bring the day to a warm and unhurried close before the return to Baku.
Day 6 — Departure Breakfast and transfer to Heydar Aliyev International Airport for onward flights.
