Azerbaijan is a country of remarkable contrasts. Its capital Baku combines a medieval walled city with one of the most dramatic modern skylines in the region. Its open steppe and Caspian coastline give way, as you travel west, to the forested foothills of the Greater Caucasus. And in the northwest, the ancient Silk Road town of Sheki preserves a way of life and a standard of craftsmanship that feels genuinely removed from the modern world.
This five-day program moves through all of it — from the fire temples and fortress walls of Baku to the prehistoric carvings of Gobustan — offering a well-paced and deeply rewarding journey.
Day 1 — Arrival in Baku Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Welcome dinner at a traditional Azerbaijani restaurant with live folk music.
Day 2 — Baku City Tour A full day in the capital: explore the UNESCO-listed Old City with the 12th-century Maiden Tower and the 15th-century Shirvanshah's Palace. Lunch in the city followed by an afternoon through the city’s modern districts, panoramic viewpoints, and the Caspian waterfront promenade. The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, shaped like a giant rolled carpet, rounds off the day.
Day 3 — Gobustan and Absheron Peninsula South along the Caspian coast to Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where more than 4,000 prehistoric rock carvings cover the hillsides, some dating back 40,000 years. Continue to the famous Gobustan Mud Volcanoes. After lunch, visit the Absheron Peninsula for the Ateshgah Fire Temple, once a Zoroastrian temple that was built around natural gas vents that produced continuous flames.
Day 4 — Shamakhi Travel to Shamakhi, the historical town in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus mountain range. Once a historic capital of the Shirvan region, Shamakhi was an important Silk Road center. Visit the Juma Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, reflecting the city’s long religious and cultural legacy. Continue to the hillside Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, the “Seven Domes” burial site of the Shirvan khans, set in a quiet landscape overlooking the valley. After the visit and lunch at a local restaurant, return to Baku in the afternoon.
Day 5 — Departure Visit the Heydar Aliyev Center, a masterpiece designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, before heading to the Heydar Aliyev International Airport for onward flights.
